Guest Post: Scots Government starts scheme to list thousands of households out of fuel poverty

In an admirable bid to stop many households on the breadline from falling into fuel poverty, the Scottish Government has introduced a £12.5M scheme to help 200,000 households pay for their fuel this winter.
Energy price hikes have seen many families and couples plunged into a state of affairs where they have to limit other purchases like food to pay for their heating and hot water.

So, what is fuel poverty?

This is when you have to spend ten percent of more of the money you have coming in so that you can afford things like food and clothing. Many people on low income have to choose to buy either electricity or food – like something out of a Charles Dickens novel set in the 1840’s.

How to help avoid fuel poverty

·         Don’t always have your hot water on: People have become so used to hot water on demand that they don’t realise how much they could save by just turning it on an hour or so before they need it and always turning it off at night. It might affect your early morning shower, but it’ll take loads off your electricity bills. This is particularly useful if you are unfortunate enough to have an electricity key meter.
·         Save little and often: Plan for the inevitable. You might not be able to stop the large corporations from putting up their prices but you can head them off at the pass by saving as little as £5 a week in the summer months. You’re far less likely to notice it that way. Put it in a rarely used bank account and keep the cash card somewhere safe but out of the way so that you’re not tempted to use it.
·         Invest in solar PV: It might seem like a considerable outlay to begin with, but will really benefit your finances long term. The government’s Feed-In Tariff means that you’ll get PAID by your energy supplier for both the electricity your solar panels generate AND for the electricity you sell to the national grid (you’ll never be able to use it all!) The Feed-In tariff rates are being cut in 2012, but you can still get in now and enjoy the great returns. Good installers like The Energy Conservation Group could install your solar panels for free and simply take the feed-in tariff payments as their payment. This gives you access to as much free, clean electricity as you like. Get in!

Judy Moody Sleepover Part 2!

Feisty, fearless Judy Moody (Jordana Beatty) is looking forward to the most super-duper, double-rare summer vacation ever. The trouble is, her parents are called out of town and her BFFs are going away with their own families. That leaves Judy trapped at home with her pesky brother Stink (Parris Mosteller) under the watchful eye of Aunt Opal (Heather Graham). But with a little playful planning – and a lot of imagination – Judy turns a snoresville summer into the way-not-boring adventure of a lifetime!

We had our Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer viewing party last weekend and it was a ton of fun!  You can check out the pre-party post here in case you missed it!

As planned, we had a pizza bar!  We had to cook the pizzas in shifts, but I went with already made/cooked pizza dough so it made things a lot faster.  They only had to cook until the cheese melted and the toppings were hot.

Delicious!

After everyone had eaten, we got settled in with popcorn and some spooky Halloween snacks (Boo-Berry fruit roll ups anyone??) to check out Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer!

The overall consensus was that a movie was great!  The kids loved it and they were discussing it afterwards, which I thought was great!  I thought the movie was cute and Talker Man popped out to have a watch too.  It's rated PG, but most of that went right over his head.  He kept talking about it and asking to see it again, so even little boys can enjoy Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer!

Each kiddo got to go home with a slumber party goodie bag complete with sleep mask and the mood rings that they got to wear during the movie.

I didn't get the okay to post pictures of kids that aren't mine, so I'm holding off for now because I don't want anyone mad ;)

Monte Carlo DVD #Giveaway

First Time Traveller Tips

Your chance to win the DVD!

If like Grace, Meg and Emma you’re off on your very first trip abroad, you’re probably filled with a mixture of excitement and fear.  A little bit of caution is probably in order, but you don’t need to be fearful as there are a number of things you can do to make your trip go as smoothly as possible. With the Selena Gomez flick Monte Carlo debuting for home entertainment on Oct. 18, we have compiled a checklist that will offer up an array of hints and tips so that you’re well prepared for all circumstances abroad.

Selena Gomez stars in Monte Carlo as Grace, a recent college graduate who is ready to live out her idea of a perfect vacation with BFF Emma (Katie Cassidy) to Paris. After several twists and turns, including her unhappy stepsister Meg (Leighton Meester) joining them on the trip, Grace falls into a fairytale of her very own in the French Riviera.

It’s All in the Plan

On a first trip it is common to take for granted the amount of planning that it takes to get you from your front door in one country to your hotel room in another. If you are assuming that everything will just go how it’s supposed to, you are wrong!

Here are a few things to make sure you get from A to B.
·         Bring your passport and boarding pass. Don’t end your trip before it has begun with a rookie error!

·     Try to organize cabs before you go, because in some countries cab drivers will take advantage of tourists and you may end up paying more than you should. This is especially important for the final cab to the airport. If they know you need to be somewhere fast, they may try and use this to their advantage.

Organize your days in advance! If you leave it to you and your friends to decide at the time you will almost always end up sleeping through the sunlight and waking up to dinner.
·

What You Need to Bring
Enough Money
·         For a first trip abroad, this is one of the most important pieces of advice to take into account. Although the large pile of newly converted money looks like it could last you for the rest of your life, it will not. Budget for how much money you will need each day and then put the money you don’t spend into a pot to blow at the end! It is also important to plan for the worst and have sufficient funds in case of emergency.

The Right Clothes
·         Often when going abroad, people either over estimate the heat and bring nothing but tank tops and flip flops - or they underestimate it and bring jeans, boots and their favorite fur coat. The best way to avoid this is to ask someone who has already been to your chosen destination and ask them what they wore and if it was sufficient.

What You Don’t Need to Bring

Excessive Amounts of Books, DVDs and Magazines
·         When packing for vacation you may imagine yourself having loads of free time to fill, when in reality you won’t. People often bring piles of magazines, books and DVDs that waste valuable space in their bags and end up being left at the bottom of a draw for the duration of the trip.

Valuables
·         This is one of the most obvious ones, but it still deserves a place on the list. Nothing ruins a holiday like the loss of your new laptop or iPod (and they often spend a lot of time sitting in the room unused anyway!). If you have nothing worth stealing, then you have nothing to worry about losing!

Win It!

Guest Post: Fun Costumes for Couples

How much fun would it be to wear a couples costume with your significant other? It’s exciting and allows you to show your creative side. Below are a few fun couples costume ideas.

It is always Halloween in the Nightmare before Christmas so why not go as Jack and Sally? For Jack’s character, a pinstriped black suit is best. Don’t forget his signature white head with big black eyes. For Sally, a long orange wig is needed. Paint your face white and mark your cheeks to look like stitches. A long dress that looks like it was made from different scraps of materials completes Sally’s outfit.

Shrek and Fiona is another costume you can try. For Shrek’s character, be sure to paint your face green. You’ll also need a white shirt, a belly, and a belt. Don’t forget his long ears! Fiona wears different dresses throughout the four Shrek films. Whichever dress you choose to wear, don’t forget the ears. For Fiona, you won’t need to paint yourself green. Just being there with “Shrek” will let everyone know who you are.

Show your inner superhero when the two of you go as Batman and Cat woman! For both of these outfits you will need to get black clothing. Iron-ons of Batman’s logo are sold at craft stores. Don’t forget his mask and cape! Cat woman’s costume will need a bodysuit and, of course, black nails. A whip and a cat ear headband make the costume much more authentic. This idea would work with just about any
hero and villains.

A caveman and cavewoman costume is unique and fun! Both male and female costumes will need pretty much the same clothing and accessories. Both will need a tunic, preferably in a leopard print. Claw jewelry and a club add to the costume. An alternative for the woman can be a bikini top and matching skirt in the same leopard print, giving it a sexy edge. Don’t forget to wear your hair a little messier than usual. For the male’s costume, a big curly wig will help you tap into your inner caveman.

Although somewhat taboo, going as a priest and a nun adds laughs to any Halloween party. For the priest costume you will need a long black robe with a white collar. A wooden cross necklace completes the ensemble. You will also need a long black robe for the nun’s costume. A white belt cord and white headpiece help the costume to look more real. A slit on the side of the robe with black lace tights gives this costume a more sensual look.

No matter what couples costume you choose, remember to have fun with it! Don’t hesitate to change it up a bit and make it your own.

#Muppets Trailer

November 23 is the day that THE MUPPETS opens in theaters!  Here's a newly released little sneak peek!

Kleenex: Back to School and On-The-Go! #Review

Here we go, barreling headfirst into cold and flu season.  I don't know about you, but Kleenex tissues are our favorite and I always make sure to have a couple of boxes on hand during the winter months!

With back to school in mind, Kleenex has added an "on-the-go" line of products with Sneeze Shield, making it that much easier to keep your sneeze to yourself!  This line is made up of the following!

-The wallet pack. It is thin and sleek, so you can always keep a tissue on hand. Their trendy design and convenient size make it the perfect accessory for hip tweens and teens.

-The auto pack. It fits perfectly in the car door or glove compartment – no need to lug around a box of tissue or fumble in a purse for a tissue while driving.

-The new and improved pocket pack. A long-time favorite has been improved to feature three-ply tissue.

I think these are great.  Think about it.  No more trying to stuff a box of tissues into the diaper bag or trying to put a few into a zippered bag to keep them clean and ready to use!  Anywhere you need them, these little on-the-go packs will fit!  I especially like the wallet pack, super cute and easy to store without broadcasting that you have a cold (or allergies) because you've got a bunch of tissues crammed into your bag. ;)

Kleenex has also come out with an AWESOME new type of tissue, Kleenex Cool Touch.  These are amazing, they're honestly cool to the touch!  We aren't sick at the moment, but I think they would feel spectacular on a sore nose!  These unscented tissues are enriched with cooling moisturizers and aloe and release a cool sensation on contact to provide soothing comfort. Body heat activates the special ingredient in the tissue which creates the cooling sensation.

Did you know that every year, the U.S. alone reports more than 62 million cases of the common cold[1] and 24 million sore noses[2]. When people are sick the combination of nasal excretions and extensive wiping create a sore red nose that feels hot and uncomfortable. Kleenex Cool Touch Facial Tissue was designed to soothe this discomfort by reducing the temperature of the skin on the nose and providing much needed relief.

You can share a free sample of the Kleenex Cool Touch by going here!

Pre-Party Planning: Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer

Just yesterday, Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer hit store shelves on DVD and Blu Ray!  When I saw the previews earlier this summer, I thought it looked pretty cute!  As it happens, I was chosen to host a slumber/viewing party of this new release!  So much fun!  I've been planning out what kind of fun things to do, what to make, snacks and all that good stuff!  It's nice to plan a not-all-boy-themed party!

For dinner, I think we're going to do a build your own pizza bar.  Yum!  I'm going to make the sauce and dough ahead of time and have all the toppings in bowls for the kids to decide what they want on their individual pizzas.  Since everyone has different tastes and preferences, I think this will be a hit for everyone!

I'm still working on craft ideas, searching favorite blogs and checking prices on some things.  One thing I do know, each kiddo will be taking home a fabulous little swag bag/backpack complete with mood rings and sleep masks!  How fun is that?

I can't wait for party night, it's going to be a blast!  Stay tuned for the after-party post to see what we did and what we thought of the movie!

Here's a fun little video to give you a taste of the movie!

Bover Bags Review

The pack 'n play has always been a pain.  It just has, there's no two ways around it, it's a necessary evil.  I don't like putting it up, I don't like taking it down and I CERTAINLY don't like trying to get it "just right" to zip it into it's tight fitting storage bag that doesn't seem to hold all the pieces.  I also have a sheet that, for the life of me, is nearly impossible to cram into the storage bag with the pack 'n play.  I mean, really, it's so tight fitting that it's hard to squeeze a SHEET in?

The creators behind BoverBags apparently suffered the same issues I do, so they came up with a GORGEOUS solution!  The Bover Bag is a pack 'n play storage bag that is not only beautiful, it's much more practical than the one that came with the pack 'n play itself!  I received the black and white "Colleen" pattern shown here.  I thought it was pretty and an easy way to girly-fy our otherwise neutral pack 'n play.

It's made slightly bigger than your folded pack 'n play and is lined with a silky material that makes sliding it in and out super easy.  Just pull the drawstring and tighten it down and you're ready to go, no more struggling with zippers or making sure the handle is sticking out just right.  The Bover Bag has a long shoulder strap making it even easier to tote around this baby essential!  Throw it over your shoulder and leave your hands free to carry all the other baby stuff you need for your adventure!  There are pockets too, for any extra poles and accessories, and yes, even sheets!  I crammed the original pack 'n play bag into one of them along with the sheet and little waterproof pad and I still have room in that pocket.  Fabulous.

The Bover Bag makes dealing with your pack 'n play a little easier, a HUGE plus for me!!

Buy It!

You can purchase a Bover Bag for yourself on their website or at one of their listed retail stores for $75.00!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

*New!* Zarbee’s Nighttime Cough and Sleep Drink

Just in time for cold and flu season when kids average one cold per month, Zarbee’s, the nation’s fastest-growing children’s cough and cold brand, has announced the introduction of a great new product for kids: Zarbee’s Nighttime Cough and Sleep Drink, an all-natural, drug-free, honey-based, over-the-counter cough remedy proven safe and effective for children two years of age and older. Developed by Dr. Zak Zarbock, one of the country’s top pediatricians, Zarbee’s Nighttime Cough and Sleep Drink is made from antioxidant-rich buckwheat honey, which clinical studies have shown is more effective at relieving coughs associated with colds and upper respiratory illnesses than Dextromethorphan (DM) or diphenhydramine, the two most common ingredients in over-the-counter cough medicines. Dextromethorphan, which is not supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics and can’t be used by kids under the age of four, is currently under FDA review for safety and efficacy, which makes effective cough remedies like Zarbee’s all the more relevant and welcome!

A little bit more about Zarbee's:

Zarbee’s is the fastest-growing children's cough and cold brand in the country. Developed by Dr. Zak Zarbock, one of the country’s top pediatricians, and recommended by pediatricians nationwide, Zarbee’s products are all-natural, drug-free and made from antioxidant-rich buckwheat honey, which clinical trials have shown to be the safest and most effective treatment for relieving coughs in children. Zarbee’s products do not include Dextromethorphan (DM), the most common over-the-counter treatment for coughs. A controversial ingredient not supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, DM has been banned for children ages four and younger and is being scrutinized by the FDA as ineffective and potentially dangerous for children. Zarbee’s products are also gluten free, contain no drugs, alcohol or dyes, have no side effects and carry no risk of overdose.

Buy It!

Zarbee’s products are available at Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid, Kmart, Kroger, Winn Dixie, Albertsons and Meijer stores nationwide. Zarbee's Original Cough Syrup sells for a suggested retail price of $7.99 for a four-fluid-ounce bottle. Zarbee’s Nighttime Cough and Sleep Drink, which comes in a powder form that mixes with soothing warm water, sells for a suggested retail price of $8.99 for six doses.

Keep Your Family Cold and Flu Free! #lysolcoldandflu

Ugh, it's about that time of year again. We're going through our first cold of the season already, unfortunately!  Thankfully it's just been a minor case of the sniffles, but it got me thinking ahead!

With kids, you, as the parent, should be showing them how to stay cold and flu free.  It's something that will stick with them and keep them healthy as they grow and it's something they'll pass on to their own kids one day.  Talker Man is at the age where he can start being proactive in keeping himself healthy so we've been working on hand washing and keeping fingers out of the nose (sigh).  There are lots more ways to stay healthy, but I think we're at a pretty good start!  Next on my list of teachings will be for him to learn to sneeze into his elbow, but for now washing his hands after sneezing and coughing seems to be pretty effective.  I know once he's in school all the time, trying to use body parts OTHER than his hands will be important, but for now he's a four year old boy.  I'm trying. ;)

I don't do flu shots, none of the kids have had them and I haven't either.  I don't really like vaccinations anyway and a voluntary one in otherwise healthy kids isn't at the top of my list.

For Tiny Man, we're working on hand washing.  He thinks it's a lot of fun to play with the soap and in the water, but it's starting the healthy habits early that's important!

Little Miss Princess is too little to understand that kind of stuff, so I just try to keep myself healthy to help keep her healthy.  Breastfeeding does a pretty good job too, I'm planning on getting her through this winter season to keep those good antibodies going into her little body!

I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer readily available in the diaper bag too.  After handling grocery carts and other random things throughout the day when you're out running around, sometimes stopping to wash up isn't at the forefront of your mind.  It's not good to use it 24/7, but as a quick clean up, it really can be helpful in keeping you healthy!

When (not if) the cold bug does hit this season, make sure you're well supplied on tissues, frozen OJ, fever reducers and cold medicine (if you use it) BEFORE you get sick.  The last thing you want to do is drag your sick self (of kiddos) into a store where you might pass it on.  Not to mention, who really wants to go to the store when they're not feeling well?  Not I!

Seeking 2011 Holiday Gift Guide Sponsors

It's that time of year again!  I'm compiling sponsors for my 2011 Holiday Gift Guide which will run from November 1 through December 13 (dates subject to change).  That's 6 weeks of fabulous gift ideas and holiday festivities!

This year's gift guide will be featuring products for everyone from baby to mom and dad!  If you have a great gift idea, fun party accessory or anything in between, feel free to contact me about being included.

As always, there are no fees associated with my gift guide.  If you would like to sponsor just a review and feature, that's fine with me.  If you would like to sponsor a review/giveaway feature, my readers would very much appreciate that!  Everyone loves to win and winning around the holidays makes it that much more fun!  (Please note, I will not give away a review item.  Winners on this blog should expect to receive new, unopened giveaway prizes.)

What does it include?

Each sponsor feature will include an individual company/product-specific blog post, photos (personal or stock), links back to your site and/or social media outlets.  If you would like to host a giveaway, our giveaways run for 2 weeks unless you prefer otherwise.

Who does it include?

Anyone!  This guide DOES include WAHM's if they would like to be featured.  I love to help promote fellow families right alongside the big name brands.
