Living in an apartment complex with only trash pick up can make recycling more than a little daunting. Honestly, it's just EASIER to throw stuff in the trash and not bother, but that's not helping anybody, now is it? In the past, we've tried keeping things separated and with the kiddos, sometimes the wrong thing would get tossed in the wrong trash can and then we'd have to dig it out and **ahh** frustration.
When we had the opportunity to check out the Rubbermaid 2-in-1 recycler, I wasn't sure if it would work for us. From the pictures, it looked kind of big and I was worried I wouldn't have anywhere to put it. I was happy to see that it's the same size as our current trash can, but it's distinguishably different so the kids know which is which. It's a full 25% smaller than other similar divided bins, and it's sleek and works well in the kitchen without being a colorful eyesore.
There are two bins in one, as the name suggests. The top bin lifts off and has the convenient handle. The bottom bin can be used to separate your recycling or can be used as a trash bin. It holds a standard 8 gallon trash bag and features "LinerLock" to prevent the bag from slipping. The bottom section tips out, as you can see in the first picture, so it makes it great for folded up cardboard and paper recyclables!
This isn't huge, but it sure holds a lot, keeping the counters cleared off and free of clutter! I love that both parts have handles and it makes recycling easier for us to manage without falling into the, "oh, just throw it away and be done with it," mindset.
You can purchase the 2-in-1 Recycler on Rubbermaid.com and at your local Meijer stores.
I sincerely hope recycling becomes an option for us in the future, either in our moving or a bin for recyclables as well as trash out in the parking lot! What's your biggest recycling challenge?
